In just another addition to the already long list of reasons why bees are awesome, researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine have discovered that bee venom kills the HIV virus, and that it does so without undue harm to surrounding cells and tissue when delivered properly.
According to a report by US News, the findings “could lead to an anti-HIV vaginal gel and [many] other treatments” against the virus.
“Our hope is that in places where HIV is running rampant, people could use this as a preventative measure to stop the initial infection,” one of the authors of the study said in a statement.
