Toxins are everywhere. They are in our food, in the air we breathe, and in the natural environment. Although companies are making an effort to reduce toxins in our environment, some of the replacements can be just as harmful. Even worse, toxins are in your body. But CBD may offer the detoxing solution you’ve been looking for.
Why Worry About Toxins?
Toxins cause a myriad of problems such as eczema, gene damage in newborn babies, and diseases of the gut. Our bodies have their own healing mechanisms. And even with those mechanisms, they may lose the fight against the more powerful and dangerous toxins in today’s society. The more toxins we put into our bodies, the more vulnerable we become to disease.
According to Dr. Jonny Lisano, Ph.D. and Certified Exercise Physiologist from 6 Degrees Wellness, “improper function [of cells] can lead to the generation of a class of compounds known as reactive oxygen species or ROS for short. These ROS’s cause a toxic environment for the cells.”
An excess of ROS production causes oxidative stress or an imbalance of normal cellular activity and is said to be responsible for diseases such as cancer. Researchers believe that unstable ROS molecules have the potential to damage healthy DNA and RNA molecules and cause cell apoptosis.
Wendy May Real founder of Pure Bloom, adds, “When the body is exposed to various physiological or physical stressors, it is unable to generate a sufficient supply of naturally-occurring endocannabinoids, [and] the endocannabinoid system (ECS) can quickly get overwhelmed and stop working properly.”
Although these statements sound scary, there is hope through alternative medicine and dietary detoxification.
The ECS helps stabilize the body’s internal functions and processes. Endocannabinoids are naturally produced cannabinoids responsible for stabilizing many of the body’s functions despite the external environment. To date, research has found that there are two subtypes of cannabinoid receptors, termed CB1 and CB2.
Detoxification And CBD
Unless you have been living under a rock somewhere you have probably heard of several buzz words — Detoxification! Alternative Medicine! Phytonutrients (aka phytochemicals)! Cannabidiol oil!
In response to new knowledge and medical research, a shift towards a new trend has taken hold over global communities. There is also controversy around the use of supplements containing Cannabidiol (CBD) oil for detoxification.
Ashley Jordan Ferira, PhD, RDN; Senior Editor, Health & Wellness Strategy at Remedy Review explains that there are three steps to this process:
- Reducing environmental toxin exposures
- Consuming nutrient-dense foods
- Correcting nutritional gaps through high-quality supplementation
Because it’s impossible to reduce environmental toxin exposure completely, the need for supporting detoxification has become necessary. There are many detoxing diet options available in the current marketplace. Detoxification is said to be helpful with addictions and reducing the adverse effects of overindulging in foods high in sugar and fat. Some farmers grow crops organically by using fertilizers that don’t contain potentially toxic materials.
Dr. Ferira then goes on to acknowledge, “This lifestyle is aimed at minimizing toxic burden. [I say] minimizing instead of ‘removing’ because … some degree of toxic burden is simply inevitable.”
Aaron Smolen editor-in-chief, and professional CBD reviewer, for AllBestCBD oil reports that while “the benefits that CBD products provide is still a contentious topic based on the research that does exist … cannabidiol does have potentially positive effects concerning detoxification.”
Does CBD Oil Work To Remove Toxins In Your Body?
Wendy May argues that based on the science so far, conventional treatments:
Do not follow the same biological pathways or interact with the endocannabinoid system in the same way as CBD and other phytocannabinoids … as a natural endocannabinoid supplement, CBD is an efficient and less toxic alternative to current pharmaceutical medications for maintaining the body’s own internal balance.
Some ways that people choose to detox include fasting and avoiding specific foods such as fats and carbohydrates. Additionaly, people may exclusively consume fruits, vegetables, herbs, and juices. Other methods include colon cleansing, chelation therapy, and removal of dental fillings that contain mercury.
Sonja Soderlund, a CBD oil researcher and expert for RaveReviews, a leading consumer review/advocacy site, cites a study conducted by George W. Booz that demonstrates that cannabidiol is a “powerful antioxidant” capable of “protecting the whole body from the effects of toxins in the environment.”
Research with human subjects shows that the current recommended dose for CBD oil and other supplements ranges anywhere between 20 and 1,500 milligrams. However, everybody has different personal tolerance levels and needs.
While the research of the effects of CBD for detoxing is in its early stages, there are multiple studies supporting CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties. These studies confirm that CBD does interact with receptors found within our bodies and brain. And, therefore, by working together, they can start a chain reaction that will lessen the gravity of the damage caused by harmful toxins.
Antioxidant Properties For Detox
Experts do agree that as CBD contains antioxidant properties, it may help in the detoxification of biological pathways — namely the endocannabinoid system.
Robin Hansen, CEO of Formula Swiss and advocate of detoxing with CBD rather than by diet alone says: “Unlike … diet options for detoxing, CBD can … kill the toxins in your body … rather than applying a band-aid to the wound, CBD can actually fully heal the wound instead!”
Dr. Ferira believes that while this remains true for either a long term lifestyle approach or in “acute detoxification,” any intervention should be carried out in “partnership with a healthcare practitioner.” In her opinion, for most people, the best method of detoxifying is to “color our plates” by eating more fruit and vegetables. Therefore if your budget allows for “organic foodstuff alternatives,” teaming them with “high-quality supplements” will help “round out these gaps.”
